A slow website costs you visitors before they ever see what you offer. Studies consistently show that most people abandon a page that takes more than about three seconds to load, and search engines fold page speed into how they rank you. The good news: most WordPress slowdowns come from a handful of causes, and every one of them is fixable in an afternoon.
Start by measuring, not guessing
Before changing anything, run your homepage through a free tool like Google’s PageSpeed Insights. It grades your site on real-world metrics and lists specific problems in order of impact. Fix what it flags first, the top two or three items usually account for most of the delay.
Resize your images
Oversized images are the most common culprit we see. A photo straight off a phone can be 5 MB, twenty times bigger than it needs to be for the web. Modern WordPress converts uploads to the efficient WebP format automatically, but it can’t shrink a 4,000-pixel image displayed in a 400-pixel column. Resize before you upload, or use a plugin like Smush to compress your whole media library at once.
Prune your plugins
Every active plugin adds code that has to load. Deactivate and delete anything you’re not actually using, including old page builders, slider plugins from a previous design, and anything installed “to try out.” Ten well-chosen plugins beat forty forgotten ones, for speed and for security alike.

Choose a lightweight theme
Some themes ship with enormous frameworks to power every imaginable layout. If your theme takes seconds to render an empty page, no amount of tuning will save it. Modern block themes are dramatically leaner, if a redesign is on your horizon anyway, speed is one more reason to make the jump.
